A basement and extension project in the Arlington Square Conservation Area which adds over 45sqm to the area of the house.
Initially commissioned to convert an existing garage, we developed alternative designs to unlock the potential of the site. The corner plot has been transformed by excavating under the garden and replacing it with a contemporary glass winter garden which links to a double-height guest annexe in place of the existing garage.
The en-suite guest annexe has its own access from the street via a mezzanine gym and steel and timber staircase.
“ We originally approached Guttfield Architecture to help with a relatively small project to convert our detached garage into a guest room for our parents whilst visiting from overseas. Whilst developing the designs, Fred suggested a radically different idea that really transformed the house and added more space than we had imagined possible. Instead of a small guest room that would be accessed through the garden, we got a double-height guest suite, glazed winter garden and mezzanine gym, all linked directly to the main house.
As well as having the imagination to think it up in the first place, Fred also had the planning expertise and technical skills to deliver what was a demanding project in terms of the Conservation Area location and basement construction.
We love the space so much that we now use it as our main bedroom and guests sleep in the main house!”
