Identical Residential Extensions
Twyford, Berkshire
Completed 2014 and 2016

We designed a pair of identical extensions to enlarge these 1870’s townhouses in a Berkshire Conservation Area. The two houses were extended and fully refurbished two years apart, for two different families.

We developed the form and materials of the extensions to compliment, rather than copy the original houses, gaining Planning Permission to replace the original pitched rear kitchen wings and later additions with larger, full-width, contemporary counterparts. Bricks from the demolished original wings were rebuilt as side walls, on which new the contemporary extensions sit.

Pared back interiors are seen as a backdrop to be enriched by the colour and variety of everyday possessions such as ingredients, books, art and furniture. We designed bespoke hanging storage for a spice library, ingredients, bar and cooking equipment rather than hiding things away.

The project aims to be an exemplar for extending and refurbishing a Victorian terrace, so the houses have been restored to be as energy efficient as possible. All windows have been replaced with contemporary aluminium framed triple-glazed units, floors, walls and roofs have been fully insulated and LED lighting has been installed throughout and energy bills for both families have been greatly reduced as a result.

In order to meet extremely tight budgets for both families, very detailed drawings and specifications were developed and we managed both projects on site, being able to deliver the extension and refurbishment of both four-bedroom houses for a total combined construction cost of £235,000.

“Whilst we had worked with architects in a professional capacity, we had never engaged one personally, and have to say that working with Fred was a completely different, wholly positive experience due to his attentive approach.

At every stage, Fred was straight forward, honest and gave us sound advice on everything from discussing potential issues with our neighbours down to the final tile choices in the bathroom. Fred listened, understood our brief and worked hard to incorporate exactly what we wanted and the level of detail and preparation before we started building was invaluable. His specification document was incredibly detailed, making it easier to price the build and control the budget, limiting variations.

Fred has a great approach with builders, dealing with them on day to day basis which took away lots of stress from us, whilst at the same time keeping us completely informed of everything. He challenged us on some of our choices, pointing out any pitfalls to ensure we created the living space we wanted. Fred very much focuses on the quality of the finished build, and didn’t cut corners whilst adhering to an agreed budget.

Fred’s attention to detail and pride in the job ultimately created a modern family home which has changed the way we live.”
