Interactive Installation

River Thame, Oxfordshire - 2007

Fred Guttfield designed and fabricated this interactive installation with the intention of increasing human engagement with various aspects of a weirpool on the River Thame in Oxfordshire.

A shoal of interactive agents responded to water speed, depth, direction, observers, and each other. Emergent patterns of light helped connect the observer with the ecology.

As well as trying to achieve the difficult aim of amplifying subtle changes in environmental conditions, the design had to overcome the challenges of installing architecture in the most inhospitable of sites - a river.
